Given its versatility and portability, your phone is the best place to store disaster planning information. Your phone’s emergency functions can include:

  • Storing emergency contacts
  • Planning and sharing evacuation routes
  • Wildfire and storm tracking
  • Earthquake early warning
  • Storing critical medical information
  • Housing a home inventory for insurance purposes
  • Accessing critical documents you may need in an emergency
  • Illumination and emergency sirens
  • Mass notification of your status to friends and loved ones
  • Probably much more.

Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs) are short emergency messages from authorized federal, state, local, tribal and territorial public alerting authorities. It is likely already set up on your phone. If you go to the safety and emergency settings in your phone, you can ensure that it’s switched on.

This is a preventable problem with the right equipment. Given the importance of your phone, it’s highly recommended that you purchase a portable charging device that can be crank or solar powered so that you can continue to use your phone even when utilities are out.
